The Queensland Tourism Minister has ruled out granting a casino licence for the Sunshine Coast under the Queensland Labor Government during a Budget Estimates Hearing in August. This is a big win for our “Say No to Council’s Casino” campaign and
for the people of the Sunshine Coast. I applaud the eorts of Sunshine Coast locals who have stood with me in opposing Council’s desire to build a casino on the Sunshine Coast and I thank them for their efforts.
I have campaigned strongly against a casino on the Sunshine Coast. I started a petition, which with your help gathered almost 7,500 signatures. I also held a Casino Community Meeting in April, where 300 local residents heard from experts on the impacts of casinos
and made their opposition known. I also made direct representations to both Mayor Jamieson and Minister Jones, spoke regularly in the media on the subject and submitted Right to Information requests to both the State Government and Local Council in order
to find out more about what private discussions had taken place. I intend to continue to closely monitor on-going developments regarding the possibility of a casino on the Sunshine Coast, and I will fight any further such proposals that arise under this and future State or Local Governments.
