Hidden gems to be recognised at 6th Annual Fisher Community Awards

Nominations are now open for one of the Sunshine Coast’s most prestigious awards programs, as Andrew Wallace launches the sixth annual Fisher Community Awards.

The Federal Member for Fisher said the awards recognise organisations and individuals who have made a difference to the community in the fields of education, employment, environment, and retirement.

“Year after year, our Sunshine Coast community is recognised as one of the most welcoming, most innovative, and most sustainable places on Earth,” Mr Wallace said.

“We are a trailblazing community because of the compassionate, creative, and hard-working people who call this place home. So many of them work under the radar. I launched the Fisher Community Awards to celebrate those hidden gems in our community whose work beyond the spotlight makes our little patch of paradise a better place.”

Last year’s winners included Mooloolah River Landcare, an environmental nonprofit which brings together businesses, schools, and residents of all ages and backgrounds to protect our local environment. Kairos Community College Caloundra were recognised for their efforts to create a flexible and innovative learning space for at-risk and disengaged young people. Mooloolaba Surf Lifesaving Club were awarded the Andrew Wallace Award for Community Group of the Year for over 100 years of selfless community and emergency service.

Mr Wallace issued a challenge to the local community.

“I can’t do this without you, Fisher,” Mr Wallace said. “I’m calling on mums and dads, teachers and bosses, employees and colleagues and everyone in between to nominate a great Sunshine Coast local or a local community- based organisation.

“Every story of service, sacrifice and success is worth celebrating, and I know that the Sunshine Coast is full of stories like that.”

“I need your help to find these local champions. Please visit my website and tell me about an individual or organisation that you think deserves to win an award in any or all ten categories and why.”

Nominees, finalists, and category winners may have their story shared on social media and will be invited to a special awards night on 22 November 2023. Winners receive a medallion and a gift at a special awards night in October.
