Letter to the Minister – Sunshine Coast Olympic Venues

I write to congratulate you on your election to Government, and your elevation to the office of Minister for Sport and Minister for Aged Care.

As proud Queenslanders, we have witnessed exceptional sporting achievements from our homegrown past Olympians and Paralympians and await the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games with much enthusiasm and anticipation. Your success in this role will help lay the foundation of an inclusive 2032 Queensland Games with multiple benefits and be of great motivation to aspiring athletes.

The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in the nation, with the population expected to grow from 350,000 to well over 500,000 by 2041.

Irrespective of the 2032 Games, the Sunshine Coast – and my electorate of Fisher – needs essential infrastructure and sporting venues to meet the growing demands of our community. Proposed 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venues for the Sunshine Coast include an upgraded 20,000-seat Sunshine Coast Stadium and a Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre at a venue to be determined in conjunction with State and Local Governments.

While we may have a 2032 deadline, this much-needed infrastructure must be completed well in advance of the Games to maximise community benefits. I ask the Federal Government to join me in support of these projects to be delivered in a timely fashion to create jobs, give the region an economic boost, and provide our future sporting stars with more facilities.

I am sure that we can agree that this essential infrastructure is deserving of a bi-partisan approach that will deliver for our community.

I would welcome the opportunity to further discuss these projects and the benefits to the Sunshine Coast’s sports community and look forward to speaking with you when Parliament resumes.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Wallace MP
Federal Member for Fisher
