Fisher Schools
Making Fisher The Place of Choice for Education
Fisher is home to nearly 70 public and private schools, as well as a world-class university and a number of public and industry-based training institutes. We certainly aren’t strapped for choice when it comes to education and training!
I’ve made it my mission to make Fisher the place of choice for education, and I’m particularly keen to see our schools engage in issues like civics, citizenship, innovation, and leadership development. Schools, after all, are the greenhouses for our next Parliamentarians, business leaders, and civil society actors.

Opportunities
GUEST CLASSES AND LECTURES
One of my favourite duties as your Federal Member of Parliament is to visit schools to teach, lecture or run workshops on areas where my roles intersect: civics education, legal studies, modern history, health and development, Asia-Pacific literacy and so much more.
I’ve taken Grade 3 classes on being safe online. I’ve taught Year 11 and 12 legal studies. I’ve lectured at the UniSC School of Law and Society. And I’ve even done a practical lesson on woodwork for Year 11 and 12 vocational education students.
LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS & YOUTH ROUNDTABLES
I think that we fail, too often, to really listen to our young people when it comes to politics and policy-making. I enjoy every chance I get to support and equip student leaders with some of my learnings as a community worker, business owner, and Member of Parliament.
I am especially keen to hear from young people whose voice often goes unheard, including those in flexible and alternative forms of education. That’s why I run my Fisher Youth Roundtables, bringing parliamentary consultation to Year 11 and 12 students in their own classrooms.
VISITS TO CANBERRA
I love welcoming Fisher students and their teachers to Australian Parliament House. It is THEIR House. During my time as the 31st Speaker of the House of Representatives, I was reminded each day of the important role educators and parliamentarians alike share in engaging, educating, and empowering our young people to participate in and protect our democratic traditions.
If your school is making a visit to Parliament for a school camp or excursion, let my team know so that we can arrange some resources and a Q&A.
GRADUATIONS, AWARDS AND CELEBRATIONS
I receive dozens of invitations each year to join local schools for graduation and valedictory ceremonies; awards nights and leadership investitures; and special events from early learning right through to higher education. I’m so excited to share in those moments of pride and achievement with families, teachers, students and supporters.
I also provide a number of school-based prizes and awards, usually in recognition of academic achievement, community service, or creative enterprise. Let me know if there’s any way I can assist in celebrating our hard working students and graduates.
FLAG PRESENTATIONS & FORMAL REPRESENTATIONS
Our Australian Flag, Aboriginal Flag, and Torres Strait Islander Flags represent thousands of years of unique culture and over 120 years of rich and enduring democratic tradition. From Australia Day to ANZAC Day, to Remembrance Day and NAIDOC Week, we are regularly afforded an opportunity to reflect, remember, and recommit to the spirit of sacrifice, service, courage and mateship which has girded and guided our nation since its inception.
Presenting the Flag, speaking at parades, and representing the Federal Parliament on formal occasions enables me to join you to do the same – a great honour as your Member for Fisher.
KEEPING KIDS SAFE ONLINE
Our kids face an extraordinary level of risk as our lives become increasingly intertwined with social media and the metaverse. As Deputy Chair of Parliament’s intelligence and defence committees, I know just how dangerous the online world can be.
That’s why I’ve teamed up with the eSafety Commissioner to prepare packs for teachers and families to assist in online safety education. I also run workshops for schools, P&Cs and local organisations on cyber-safety. My Keeping Kids Safe survey is gathering information to assist in better targeting research and resources to that end.
Let me know if you’re interested in facilitating an eSafety Workshop with staff, students, families – or if you would like me to present some eSafety Resource Packs to your school.
