ANDREW WALLACE MP & SPEAKER LAUNCH “MY FIRST SPEECH” COMPETITION FOR SUNSHINE COAST STUDENTS

MEDIA RELEASE 5 August 2025

Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace MP, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Milton Dick MP, are today launching the 2025 My First Speech competition for local schools across the Fisher electorate.

This national competition invites students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to imagine themselves as newly elected Members of Parliament and deliver a 90-second (300-word) first speech on an issue they’re passionate about.

One winning entrant from each year level will be flown to Canberra with a parent or guardian to present their speech live at Parliament House and take part in a hands-on parliamentary program designed to bring civics to life.

Entries are open now and will close at 11:59pm AEST on Monday 15 September 2025.

To learn more or submit an entry, students can visit the official competition website.

Andrew Wallace MP said:
“This is an exciting opportunity for students on the Sunshine Coast to step into the shoes of a Member of Parliament and shine a national spotlight on the issues that matter to them.”

“Our region is full of bright, thoughtful young leaders. I encourage every eligible student in Fisher to get involved and share their voice.”

Hon. Milton Dick MP added:
“One of my key priorities as Speaker has been to promote parliamentary education to students across the country, and this is yet another exciting way that young people can take an active role in our democratic system.”

“This competition helps students understand how Parliament works and empowers them to engage directly with the issues that matter to them and their generation.”
