MEDIA STATEMENT 13 October 2025
Today is a day none of us believed we would ever see. A day of deliverance, of tears and joy mingled, of justice served and hope renewed.
After a long and agonising two years, the news has broken that all 20 living hostages held in captivity have finally been released. From the depths of despair to the promise of tomorrow, their return marks a monumental moment for Israel, for their families, and for all who have prayed and worked for their freedom.
I speak not only as an Australian parliamentarian and Chair of the Australia-Israel Allies Caucus, but as a husband, a father, and a citizen who has watched this tragedy unfold with a heavy heart. There are no words that can fully capture the anguish endured by the hostages, their loved ones, or the Israeli people during this long period of uncertainty. To see the hostages emerge from those dark days alive is nothing short of a miracle. We also recognise the pain and suffering of Palestinian civilians who have endured the horrors and deprivations of war.
The release of the hostages and the end of hostilities is a victory beyond politics. It is a triumph of persistence, moral clarity and international resolve. While many have contributed to these efforts, this outcome is owed above all to the leadership and determination of the President of the United States and his team. Their relentless diplomacy, strategic pressure and courage made this day possible. Australia should be proud to stand alongside our allies in supporting these efforts.
As Chair of the Australia-Israel Allies Caucus, I reaffirm that our bond with Israel is not symbolic or seasonal. It is steadfast, principled and rooted in shared values of democracy, justice and the sanctity of human life. Today’s events renew our duty to stand with Israel and to ensure that such atrocities can never happen again.
To the families who have suffered beyond measure: your pain has been seen, your grief has been felt, and your prayers have been answered. The return of your loved ones must mark the beginning of healing and recovery. You are not alone. Australia stands with you.
We also look ahead to the next steps. The disarming of Hamas, the return of the bodies of those still held, and the release of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners detained as part of this complex exchange must now pave the way for a durable peace. True reconciliation will require courage and honesty from all sides. Peace built on justice, not terror, must follow if we are to prevent such horror from ever being repeated.
To all Australians: this is a moment to reflect on the fragility of peace, on the necessity of resolve, and on the importance of standing with those who face terror. Freedom, human dignity and justice are not optional. They are the foundations of who we are.
Let the world remember this day as one where hope overcame cruelty, faith triumphed over despair, and 20 lives were given back to their people. May it be a turning point not just for Israel, but for humanity.
