MEDIA STATEMENT 28 August 2025
As a staunch supporter of child safety, I welcome the introduction of Daniel’s Law into the
Queensland Parliament yesterday. Children’s safety must always be at the forefront of our decisions,
and this reform is an important breakthrough, especially after the recent raising of the most
appalling allegations of child sexual abuse in childcare centres.
Daniel’s Law puts the rights of children, victims and parents ahead of dangerous predators through a
clear, three-tiered system:
A public website listing convicted child sex offenders who are not complying with their
reporting obligations and whose whereabouts are unknown, including photographs and key
personal details.
A local area search function so families can identify if certain reportable offenders are living
nearby.
A parent and guardian application process allowing police to confirm whether an adult who
has regular, unsupervised contact with a child is a current reportable offender.
Crucially, the legislation includes strong penalties for any misuse of information. This ensures the
register is a tool for safety and prevention, with actions handled by police to protect everyone
involved.
I congratulate Premier David Crisafulli, Police Minister Dan Purdie and the LNP State Government for
bringing this law forward and for their focus on restoring safety where Queenslanders live.
I also acknowledge Bruce and Denise Morcombe, whose strength and persistence over more than
two decades have driven change across our state and nation. Daniel’s legacy lives on in practical
measures that help protect other children.
This is a good day for child safety in Queensland. Daniel’s Law will give parents the information and
confidence they need to help keep their children safe, and it will deter offenders who think they can
hide from scrutiny. I look forward to seeing the Parliament pass these laws and to working with
colleagues federally to ensure national systems complement this reform.
