MEDIA STATEMENT 1 April 2026
As the Jewish community prepares to celebrate Passover this evening, I would like to extend my wishes for a joyful and meaningful celebration. Passover is a time of reflection and hope, symbolising the resilience and strength of the Jewish people.
This year’s Passover holds particular significance as the Jewish community continues to mourn the tragic Bondi Beach terrorist attack and rising antisemitism worldwide. Many Jewish Australians also remain deeply concerned for their loved ones in Israel during this time. While this is a solemn time, Passover offers much comfort and hope.
The story of Passover, which celebrates the miraculous deliverance of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery and their journey toward freedom in the Promised Land, serves as a powerful symbol of triumph against oppression. Just as the Jewish people were pursued by Pharaoh, they continue to face similar forces of hatred. Yet Passover is a timeless reminder that the Jewish people not only survive but thrive, while the forces of hatred fade into history.
It is also a reminder of our collective responsibility to stand against antisemitism. It is unacceptable that Jewish people live in fear because of who they are, especially in a nation like ours that has prided itself on social cohesion and acceptance.
The Bondi Beach terrorist attack tragically highlighted the devastating consequences of this unchecked hatred. This senseless hatred serves as a wake-up call for all of us. We must stand united against antisemitism to ensure such tragedies are never repeated.
As Chair of the Australia-Israel Allies Caucus, I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to standing with the Jewish people, unequivocally and unapologetically.
As Jewish families gather to celebrate Passover, let us all reflect on the strength and resilience of the Jewish community. May this season remind us of the power of hope and the importance of standing against the scourge of antisemitism.
I wish Jewish communities in Australia and around the world a joyful, meaningful, and peaceful Passover.
